Ever read an article on speeding up your computer. You will notice one thing in common in almost all of them. Thats Defragmentation. Its an important step in keeping your PC more healthy and ensure its longer life. So the question that comes to our mind is "what does it exactly do?"
Well, It rearranges the files on your hard drive so it is quicker to access. Just like your room, which look very untidy when all of the things are just thrown here and there. Now suppose you have to find something in that crowd. Wouldn't it be a difficult task to find it. If you'll arrange the room and place everything in a proper place which usually you never do, it will be faster and easier to find that thing with less use of energy. Same is the case with your computer. If the files stored on your hard drive is scattered computer will take longer time to search for it and respond to you very slow. Now to arrange files in computer you need not to place it properly yourself, which i guarantee you won't do. There are programs that can do it for you.You hard drive is a magnetic disk and the head will write dots on any place it finds, placer all of dots on only one section of the disk will make access for the head a bit faster.
It does make your computer slightly faster (especially if you have a lot of files out of order), however don't defragment too often as it is has been said that can damage your hard drive if used too much. This is because erasing and writing dots for the head is very intensive and if you do it too much you may blunt the head or even make it crash meaning all your data is gone and cannot be fixed.
I personally use TuneUp Or Disk Defragmenter provided by Microsoft and I recommend it to you, it is an excellent program.
